Happy Holidays, students! Construction of the new classroom wing, cafeteria and gymnasium additions at Garrett Middle School is complete, although the contractor is still putting the finishing touches on the project. This renovation project, led by Perkins + Will Architects, was largely constructed while staff and students still utilized the existing school. The end result is a modern-day facelift for the original brick school building. Site improvements designed by Breedlove Land Planning include upgraded bus and parent circulation, emergency and service access, and new stormwater management facilities, including bioretention cells, to address stormwater runoff quality and quantity.
Construction has begun on a new three-story classroom addition at the existing North Gwinnett High School. Bowen & Watson is the lead contractor for the project. The scope includes an addition, sidewalks and plaza areas, and water quality treatment systems. The new addition will be replacing an existing portion of the school building in an effort to reduce the impervious footprint on site. Breedlove Land Planning and Cunningham, Forehand, Matthews, Moore Architects have teamed up to bring Gwinnett County Schools more classroom space in a smaller footprint. The project is on schedule to be complete by the start of the school year in 2014.
Construction continues at the new Smyrna Area Elementary School. Breedlove Land Planning, in collaboration with Cunningham, Forehand, Matthews, Moore Architects, incorporated many sustainable design elements in an attempt to help the project achieve LEED Gold certification. These elements include permeable pavers, native landscaping with drip irrigation, wet detention, and buffer preservation. In order to preserve as much of the natural buffers on site as possible, extensive walls were designed to protect trees. Carroll Daniel Construction Company has taken the lead in the construction of the school. Scheduled to open in August 2013, the new elementary school will be a welcomed amenity to the City of Smyrna.
