Smyrna Elementary School to Open Fall 2013

3-21-13 SymrnaElemThe new Smyrna Elementary School is near completion with plans to open for the 2013-2014 school year.  Led by Cunningham, Forehand, Matthews, Moore Architects, the Smyrna Elementary School is going to be Cobb County School District’s first LEED certified school.  Breedlove Land Planning incorporated LEED site design elements that include a permeable paver parking lot, permeable paver plazas, native landscaping, and saving/protecting natural tree conservation areas.  The school project was part of a City of Smyrna master plan to redevelop an abandoned commercial area, which also includes retail and office spaces, restaurants and residencies.

D.M. Therrell High School wins AIA Georgia Merit Award

Recently the Georgia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects announced their most recent design awards winners.  Breedlove Land Planning is proud to have assisted Perkins + Will in the renovation of the LEED pending D.M. Therrell High School.  As the AIA website states “Benjamin E. Mays High School demonstrates how an aged, worn school building can be transformed into a modern learning facility that the community, teachers, and students can be proud of.” BLP provided Civil and Landscape design services.  Congratulations to Atlanta Public Schools, Perkins + Will and all the AIA award winners.  (photo © Perkins + Will)

Construction Progress at the New Smyrna Area Elementary School

Construction continues at the new Smyrna Area Elementary School.  Breedlove Land Planning, in collaboration with Cunningham, Forehand, Matthews, Moore Architects, incorporated many sustainable design elements in an attempt to help the project achieve LEED Gold certification.  These elements include permeable pavers, native landscaping with drip irrigation, wet detention, and buffer preservation.  In order to preserve as much of the natural buffers on site as possible, extensive walls were designed to protect trees.  Carroll Daniel Construction Company has taken the lead in the construction of the school.  Scheduled to open in August 2013, the new elementary school will be a welcomed amenity to the City of Smyrna.

Congratulations to Rogers Wells, Breedlove Land Planning’s Newest LEED Accredited Professional

Roger Wells, LEED AP BD+C, an environmental designer with Breedlove Land Planning, has passed his Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Design + Construction Exam.  As the United States Green Building Council explains, “The LEED AP BD+C credential provides a standard for professionals participating in the design and construction phases of high-performance, healthful, durable, affordable and environmentally sound commercial, institutional, and high-rise residential buildings”.  Roger’s achievement means that 100% of our landscape architects and over 80% of our design professionals are LEED accredited professionals.  Congratulations Roger!

Grand Opening for the Richard B. Russell Building Special Collections Library

As the Georgia State Financing and Investment Commission website notes, recently the University of Georgia celebrated the opening of its new state-of-the-art Richard B. Russell Building Special Collections Library in Athens. “We are exhilarated to reach completion of this outstanding new facility designed for the purpose of growing, caring for and sharing the university’s most distinguished collections,” said P. Toby Graham, deputy university librarian and director of the Hargrett Library. “After many years of planning and fundraising, we are eager to welcome students, researchers and the general public to engage with our collections in the Russell Building’s research rooms, exhibition halls and classrooms and through public events.”  You can read more about Breedlove Land Planning’s role in this project here.

New University of Georgia Special Collections Library Open

The Richard B. Russell Building, new home to the University of Georgia Special Collections Libraries, has opened to researchers.  This LEED Gold pending project, as seen above from Google Earth, was recently completed.  Breedlove Land Planning provided civil engineering and land planning services for the project and is overseeing the completion of the new campus oval to the south.  A Grand Opening will be scheduled for February, 2012.

D.M. Therrell High School Renovation Complete

As recently reported in Talk Up APS, Atlanta Public Schools has just had a ribbon cutting for the new D.M. Therrell High School Complex.  This renovation, led by Perkins+Will Architects, included new open space areas, upgrades to stormwater management facilities, a complete rehabilitation of the upper athletics field and expanded parking facilities that also strive to reduce heat island impacts.  Breedlove Land Planning provided site design services for this pending LEED for Schools Gold project.

Newton County’s Porter Memorial Branch Library Receives LEED Gold Certification

The Newton County Library System’s newest building is LEED Gold.  Porter Memorial Branch Library is a full-service branch of the system. The 18,000 square foot LEED Gold building is named in honor of James Hyde Porter and featues adult and children’s books, audio books, DVD’s and music CDs, public computing with Internet access, plus a Teen Room, a Quiet Room, Study rooms, a Meeting Room and Conference Room.  Breedlove Land Planning provided all civil engineering and landscape architecture services for Newton County Government’s first LEED building.

Clarence Brown Conference Center is LEED Gold Certified

The Daily Tribune News reports that the Clarence Brown Conference Center has achieved LEED Gold certification.  The article states “setting out to attain environmental and sustainable building status, those involved in the engineering, design and construction of the Clarence Brown Conference Center exceeded expectations.”  Breedlove Land Planning provided all site design services for the project and is proud to have played a critical role in helping Bartow County meet, and exceed, their goals for this project.  You can learn more about the center here.

Jean Child Young Middle School is LEED Gold

This month the Jean Child Young Middle School, an Atlanta Public School renovation and addition project, has been awarded Gold certification by the United States Green Building Council.  Designed by Perkins + Will Architects and constructed by HJ Russell and Company, this LEED for Schools project utilizes bioretention ponds and storm water infiltration to remove pollutants from runoff, included the complete renovation of the football and athletics field, upgraded the existing parking lot to incorporate carpool and low emission vehicle preferential parking, and created of a series of new plaza areas including an amphitheater.  Breedlove Land Planning provide all site design services for this project.
