Breedlove Land Planning is proud to be a part of the University of Georgia’s Business Learning Community design team. This weeks ceremony included both the dedication and ribbon cutting for the Phase 2 building and the groundbreaking for the Phase 3 buildings. Follow this link for more details from the event:
Over the Fall of 2012, Breedlove Land Planning worked with Georgia Tech Facilities, Capital Planning and Space Management and Recreation departments to fast track the design and approval of the Roe Stamps Field renovation master plan. This 53 page documents provides guidance for the redevelopment of what is arguably the most heavily used multi-purpose athletic field in the Southeast United States. Since the completion of this master plan, BLP was approved to produce and permit construction documents. With little time to waste, this multimillion dollar site renovation project was been designed, engineered and submitted for permitting. By the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year, we hope to see this project completed. More updates will follow as progress continues!
As part of a multi-block streetscape renovation project, Breedlove Land Planning has designed and permitted improvements to the entrance plaza of the Georgia Tech Edge Building. The building, which is home to the campus Athletics department, currently has an elevated entrance off of Bobby Dodd Way. The renovation, currently under construction, will reduce the heights of existing retaining walls, introduce granite veneer and other campus hardscape standards, improve access for the disabled and create new seating areas on multiple levels. The design, as shown on the above BLP rendering, will greatly help reduce the impact of the building’s brutalist façade.
First came the design and construction of Peter’s Park. Now, the next phases of the Bobby Dodd Way streetscape are under construction. This project will renovate three blocks of major thoroughfare through the heart of the Georgia Tech campus, including the main entrance of the football stadium. Improvements include new stormwater infrastructure, additional sitting areas, new sidewalks, improved intersections and a ‘road diet’ to reduce the amount of asphalt along Bobby Dodd Way in an effort to increase pedestrian connections and comfort. More photos to come as Mann Mechanical continues their construction of our design.
Breedlove Land Planning, Inc. was thrilled to be a part of the design team for the new Richard B. Russell, Jr. Special Collections Library on the University of Georgia Campus in Athens, GA. The building, designed by Collins Cooper Carusi Architects, and the special collections that are housed here are truly one of a kind historically significant treasures for the entire state of Georgia. The site work for this exciting project is highlighted by several sustainable components. The impact of this project on the water quality and sustainable stormwater infrastructure on the UGA campus will be felt for years to come. This project transformed a 95% impervious parking lot with no stormwater treatment into a beautiful piece of campus with top of the line water quality and stormwater management practices. The project includes five bio-retention cells, an enhanced engineered treatment swale, and three underground cisterns with a total capacity of 105,000 gallons of collect stormwater and condensate from the building. The library opened in the spring of 2012 when the building and initial infrastructure was completed. Since the opening Breedlove Land Planning has followed up our original site design with a 2nd phase that completed the large oval front lawn and activated the cistern pumping system that sends stormwater and condensate that is harvested on the Special Collections Library site to the nearby central utility plant for recovery use.
Georgia Perimeter College is currently working towards the renovation of its existing soccer field at the Clarkston Campus. The new field will be reoriented and constructed with a sand-based rootzone mixture and underdrain system to allow for quick field drainage. This will allow for optimal play time in the event of small rain storms. The field is scheduled to be completed in time for the 2012 season. Breedlove Land Planning provided all site design and construction administration services to Georgia Perimeter College.
Not even a year into its first growing season, the newly renovated Peters Park on the campus of Georgia Tech is looking great. The sensible use of native and adapted plants and proper soil amendments has ensured that, even in this period of historically warm temperatures, the newly built landscape is surviving- and thriving. One of the most unique features of this park and plaza area is this bioretention pond and stormwater flume, intended to promote the infiltration of runoff while relying on natural processes to increase water quality.
As the Georgia State Financing and Investment Commission website notes, recently the University of Georgia celebrated the opening of its new state-of-the-art Richard B. Russell Building Special Collections Library in Athens. “We are exhilarated to reach completion of this outstanding new facility designed for the purpose of growing, caring for and sharing the university’s most distinguished collections,” said P. Toby Graham, deputy university librarian and director of the Hargrett Library. “After many years of planning and fundraising, we are eager to welcome students, researchers and the general public to engage with our collections in the Russell Building’s research rooms, exhibition halls and classrooms and through public events.” You can read more about Breedlove Land Planning’s role in this project here.
The Richard B. Russell Building, new home to the University of Georgia Special Collections Libraries, has opened to researchers. This LEED Gold pending project, as seen above from Google Earth, was recently completed. Breedlove Land Planning provided civil engineering and land planning services for the project and is overseeing the completion of the new campus oval to the south. A Grand Opening will be scheduled for February, 2012.
Breedlove Land Planning has been authorized by the Georgia Institute of Technology to move into the construction documentation phase (CDs) for the Bobby Dodd Streetscape Project. A two block section of Bobby Dodd Way in the heart of this urban campus will be replaced to enlarge pedestrian walks, provide better accessibility for users and bring the site up to speed with the new campus landscape standards.
