Through these unusual times of social distancing, Breedlove Land Planning continues to serve our clients and perform site visits to our ongoing projects. We’re especially happy to see our education projects preparing for students to (hopefully) arrive this fall.
The new Smyrna Elementary School is near completion with plans to open for the 2013-2014 school year. Led by Cunningham, Forehand, Matthews, Moore Architects, the Smyrna Elementary School is going to be Cobb County School District’s first LEED certified school. Breedlove Land Planning incorporated LEED site design elements that include a permeable paver parking lot, permeable paver plazas, native landscaping, and saving/protecting natural tree conservation areas. The school project was part of a City of Smyrna master plan to redevelop an abandoned commercial area, which also includes retail and office spaces, restaurants and residencies.
Happy Holidays, students! Construction of the new classroom wing, cafeteria and gymnasium additions at Garrett Middle School is complete, although the contractor is still putting the finishing touches on the project. This renovation project, led by Perkins + Will Architects, was largely constructed while staff and students still utilized the existing school. The end result is a modern-day facelift for the original brick school building. Site improvements designed by Breedlove Land Planning include upgraded bus and parent circulation, emergency and service access, and new stormwater management facilities, including bioretention cells, to address stormwater runoff quality and quantity.
Construction continues at the new Smyrna Area Elementary School. Breedlove Land Planning, in collaboration with Cunningham, Forehand, Matthews, Moore Architects, incorporated many sustainable design elements in an attempt to help the project achieve LEED Gold certification. These elements include permeable pavers, native landscaping with drip irrigation, wet detention, and buffer preservation. In order to preserve as much of the natural buffers on site as possible, extensive walls were designed to protect trees. Carroll Daniel Construction Company has taken the lead in the construction of the school. Scheduled to open in August 2013, the new elementary school will be a welcomed amenity to the City of Smyrna.
In 2009, the historic flooding of Sweetwater Creek devastated Cobb County’s Clarkedale Elementary School. This upcoming school year will mark the grand opening of the new school in its new location. Breedlove Land Planning is proud to have done its part to assist the community in this dramatic rebuilding project. The new school building, designed by Cunningham, Forehand, Matthews & Moore Architects, incorporates many sustainable design elements including an extensive porous paver parking lot. By allowing stormwater runoff to infiltrate into soil rather than concentrate as runoff, this school campus is doing its part to be a responsible addition to the watershed- a small but meaningful step in reducing the impacts of development that lead to the original school’s flooding.
The Atlanta Journal and Constitution has recently reported on Cobb County School construction projects that are “wrapping up this summer in Georgia’s second-largest school district, which will help relieve overcrowding and eliminate the need for some 72 trailers.” Breedlove Land Planning is proud to have provided civil engineering and landscape architectural services for many of these including North Cobb High School and Cheatham Hill Elementary.
