The Decatur City Commission recently approved Breedlove Land Planning’s “Option B” design for a shared-use path on South Columbia Drive. The improvements are needed to accommodate pedestrian traffic once the new Talley Street Upper Elementary School opens in August. The concept was designed o be used by pedestrians and cyclists, connecting the new Talley Street School, Legacy Park and the East Decatur Greenway.
The selected design includes a 10-foot shared use path with a three to five-foot landscaped buffer. The path will be about a quarter-mile long initially, though long-term plans call for eventually linking Talley with the multi-use path further south on Katie Kerr Drive. BLP also provided site design services for Talley Street Upper Elementary School.

As the Decatur-AvondaleEstates Patch reports, the “new career education facility for Decatur High School students officially opened Thursday morning, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge”. Breedlove Land Planning assisted Collins Cooper Carusi Architects and Ra-Lin Contractors in the site design and construction of this new facility, which includes a number of infiltration based stormwater management features, new plazas and play areas for students and a reclaimed concrete patio that reduced waste and landfill haul-off.
As the City of Decatur Website notes the Decatur High School Performing Arts and Sports Center has received a 2011 Decatur Design Award. Breedlove Land Planning provided landscape architectural and civil engineering services for this project as an consultant to Collins Cooper Carusi Architects. Winter Construction implemented a wide variety of site improvements including an extremely complicated 6-phase site demolition plan, a synthetic sports field, a variety of hardscape and plaza designs and underground stormwater management facilities. The marks the second consecutive year Breedlove Land Planning has been on a Decatur Design Award team.
Since 2009, The Decatur City School System has been working with DeKalb Technical College to open one of the state’s newest career academies for high school students. This project, located at Decatur High School, is close to completion. The site program includes plaza improvements, better access for the disabled and ecologically based stormwater pollutant control methods. Breedlove Land Planning also designed an outdoor patio adjacent to the culinary arts center that transforms an old concrete service drive into an ornamental feature. By specifying the careful demolition and salvaging of existing concrete, these panels are being reconstructed into an outdoor patio, thus utilizing existing resources and minimizing haul off to the landfill. More to come as this project wraps up.
Breedlove Land Planning is proud to be a sponsor of the Decatur Education Foundation’s Tour deCatur, Saturday, March 26, at Decatur High School. Participants can run the 5K race or 1-mile Fun Run, and all proceeds benefit Decatur’s children and youth through the Decatur Education Foundation. Check out the race route here.
