Breedlove Land Planning is pleased to have contributed to the Perkins + Will team for Benjamin E. Mays High School. This Atlanta Public School won in the highest award catagory offered at the recent AIA Georgia design awards. As the AIA webpage notes, “Mays is an example of how adapting and renovating the existing school can be as effective as completely demolishing and building a new building. This facility is transformational for the Mays community and has been accomplished at a much lower financial and environmental cost than building a whole new school.”Breedlove Land Planning provided all site design serices. Three Georgia schools were recently announced as ‘Green Ribbon’ by the U.S. Department of Education. Breedlove Land Planning is proud to have provided sustainable site design services for two of the three- Arabia Mountain High School (DeKalb County Schools) and Springdale Park Elementary School (Atlanta Public Schools). “Honored schools exercise a comprehensive approach to creating ‘green’ environments through reducing environmental impact, promoting health, and ensuring a high-quality environmental and outdoor education to prepare students with the 21st century skills and sustainability concepts needed in the growing global economy”. The Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) South Atlantic Chapter recently announced the recipients of their 2011 Project Achievement Awards which ‘recognizes outstanding achievement in the practice of construction management’. New South Construction Company was recognized for their superlative work in overseeing the construction of the Mount Pisgah Athletic Complex. This complex, designed by Breedlove Land Planning, includes an 8-lane track and field/football complex with parking, plazas, bleachers, concessions and other amenities. As the City of Decatur Website notes the Decatur High School Performing Arts and Sports Center has received a 2011 Decatur Design Award. Breedlove Land Planning provided landscape architectural and civil engineering services for this project as an consultant to Collins Cooper Carusi Architects. Winter Construction implemented a wide variety of site improvements including an extremely complicated 6-phase site demolition plan, a synthetic sports field, a variety of hardscape and plaza designs and underground stormwater management facilities. The marks the second consecutive year Breedlove Land Planning has been on a Decatur Design Award team.
Springdale Park Elementary School was recently recognized with two awards at the AIA Georgia annual conference. This project, designed by Perkins + Will with Breedlove Land Planning as a site design consultant, received an AIA Georgia Citation Award for design excellence and an Excellence in Sustainability Award by the Georgia Chapter of the United States Green Building Council. This LEED Gold pending project provides stormwater management and runoff pollution control through underground infiltration, relies on a drought tolerant plant palette appropriate to the historical context of the Druid Hills neighborhood and preserved hundreds of caliber inches of mature hardwoods throughout the site. The Decatur Fire Station No.2 was just awarded a AIA Georgia 2010 Citation Award. This LEED silver project in the Oakhurst neighborhood of the City of Decatur conserves water, employs recycled materials and energy-efficient systems, and uses natural light throughout. Breedlove Land Planning, as a consultant to LP3 Architecture, provided all site design services for this award winning project. Breedlove Land Planning is pleased to announce that Springdale Park Elementary School recently received an Award of Excellence from the Atlanta Urban Design Commission. As one of the first Atlanta Public Schools to attempt LEED Silver certification, Springdale Park Elementary School blends environmental and cultural elements in one cohesive design. The school is located in the Druid Hills neighborhood of Atlanta and lies adjacent to Springdale Park, originally designed by Fredrick Law Olmsted, the “Father” of the profession of Landscape Architecture. Breedlove Land Planning provided site design consultant services to Perkins+Will Architects and designed a program that includes infiltration based stormwater management, a native and adapted plant palette that is historically appropriate to the neighborhood and the preservation of hundreds of inches of mature oak trees.
In addition to the 2010 Build Georgia Specialty Contractor Awards, Breedlove Land Planning provided site design services for three projects in which the general contractor was recognized. Saliba Construction Company, C.D. Moody Construction Company and Swofford Construction were given awards for Twin Rivers Middle School, Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership and Lanier High School Athletics Facilities, respectively. These firms represent the best work in the industry and we congratulate them, as well as the other award winners.
