Red Top Mountain State Park

The beach renovation at Red Top Mountain Start Park is nearing completion. For years, this popular destination on Lake Allatoona was loved too much as heavy crowds led to erosion and degradation of this natural area. Breedlove Land Planning worked with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to rehabilitate this site through the use of boardwalks, stairs and ramps to restore the environmental integrity of this wooded area while providing universal accessibility from the top of the site to the beach at the bottom. A new picnic area, restroom with outdoor changing areas, outdoor plaza and enhanced site amenities such as foot washes, showers, benches and overlooks await users. We hope to see you there in the Summer of 2022!

Red Top Mountain State Park Beach Improvements

Visitors to Red Top Mountain State Park will be able to enjoy a new and improved beach area when the weather warms up! Breedlove Land Planning developed plans for the Department of Natural Resources to update the area’s amenities and improve access from the parking area down to the sandy beach. The design nestles improvements under existing tree canopy, including a new restroom building, ADA compliant board walks, new picnic areas, and a new multi-use plaza area that can accommodate events and food trucks. The project is currently under construction with an anticipated completion date in the spring. Breedlove Land Planning looks forward to seeing the project completed and in use!

Burton Fish Hatchery

The design for the renovation of the Burton Fish Hatchery, located on Lake Burton in Clarkesville, Georgia, kicked off in the fall of 2018 and construction is well underway with an anticipated completion date of February 2020. The original Georgia Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Resources Division facility was constructed in the 1940s and produces one-third of the trout that are stocked in Georgia’s streams, rivers and lakes each year. The facility includes several existing raceways that have been updated for longevity and a large, enclosed building to house eight 16-foot diameter circular tanks.  This will help eliminate low production years due to weather and protect the fish from pesky predators like raccoons and birds of prey. Once completed, the facility will re-open to the public for guided tours. The renovation also includes an expanded parking area for an adjacent boat ramp accessing the lake. Let’s go fishing!

Evans County Public Fishing Area

Recently the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Resources Division proudly unveiled a new event center and campground at the Evans County Public Fishing Area. Breedlove Land Planning provided landscape architecture and civil engineering services for both facilities to take full advantage of the adjacent Bidd Sands Lake. The ribbon cutting ceremony for these new amenities included a formal dedication of Bidd Sands Lake, named after local hero Captain William Daniel ‘Bidd’ Sands, who was killed in action during the Vietnam War.

The event center, designed by Lyman Davidson Dooley Architects, is situated on a small peninsula and offers wonderful views of the lake. The building contains a full kitchen and restrooms, and is accompanied by a new parking lot, walkways and landscaping. It will certainly be an enjoyable venue to host any event from weddings to family reunions to small conferences.

The campground contains 14 campsites accommodating RVs, 8 tent-only sites, and a restroom and shower facility. It will be an attractive amenity for both fishing and camping enthusiasts, as it also offers views and access to Bidd Sands Lake. Anglers can easily stay overnight or campers can easily fish!

Breedlove Land Planning is delighted to have a part in both of these projects that will undoubtedly be wonderful assets for Evans County and the surrounding community.

Veterans Day program at Walk of Heroes Veterans War Memorial

A large crowd attended the Veterans Day program at the Walk of Heroes Veterans War Memorial on Monday. Speakers for the event included U.S. Sen. David Perdue, U.S. Rep. Hank Johnston, State Rep. Vernon Jones, Rockdale Commission Chair Oz Nesbitt Sr., and Rockdale County Sheriff Eric Levett. Brigadier General Randall V. Simmons Jr., Assistant Adjutant General, Georgia Army National Guard, was the keynote speaker and said, “I have to comment on this tremendous park. I’ve been to many events like this, and I can’t say that I’ve seen another one in the country as nice as this one. Thank you for your vision and your inspiration.” Breedlove Land Planning designed the park and is proud to support our veterans. Click here to learn more about the event.

North Ola Park Ribbon Cutting

Henry County recently held a ribbon cutting for the North Ola Park expansion project. Breedlove Land Planning worked with Henry County Parks & Recreation in 2015 to masterplan the multi-phased expansion. In 2017, BLP teamed with Sports Turf Companies, Inc. to provide Design Build services for the first phase of the project.

This recently completed first phase includes two new baseball fields, field irrigation, dugouts, bleachers, score towers and field lighting, as well as a bridge to connect the park expansion to the original park. Phase II of the project will add two more baseball fields, parking areas, pedestrian circulation, two concession / restroom buildings, septic field and a stormwater management facility.

Red Top Mountain State Park Visitor Center

The Visitor Center at Red Top Mountain State Park is nearing completion. The new ‘heart’ of this popular Georgia State Park will provide a wide variety of services for users including natural and historic interpretation of the ecological and human history of this fascinating park along the shores of Lake Allatoona. The new site design includes improved vehicular and pedestrian circulation, an entry plaza, and outdoor education pavilion, amphitheater and a host of native and drought tolerant trees, shrubs and groundcovers. The building, designed by Croft and Associates and constructed by Lovvorn Construction, should be open to the public by late September 2019.

Grant Park Gateway Project

Last month, Breedlove Land Planning helped celebrate the ‘topping out’ of the Grant Park Gateway project. Winter Johnson Group hosted the City of Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation along with design and construction team members to commemorate this major construction milestone. As part of the design team, Breedlove Land Planning provides civil engineering services for this project that will feature a new parking garage hidden below an extensive vegetated green roof, a new restaurant and improved pedestrian connections through Grant Park. We are proud to be part of such an exciting project that will provide the Grant Park community with yet another wonderful amenity and are eager to see its completion.
