It was great to get out on the course and enjoy this fall weather for the UGA Ed Hoard Golf Tournament.
We enjoyed seeing so many current and past clients and partners at Mike Breedlove’s retirement celebration! The party was held at BLP’s old office in Conyers on Friday. Jennifer Messer, UGA’s Director of Development for the College of Environment and Design, was there to announce the establishment of the Mike Breedlove Scholarship Fund. BLP’s partners, Chip Brown, Matt Tanner, Scott Talbot, and Kyle Webb created the scholarship to commemorate Mike’s career and achievements in the field of landscape architecture. Scholarships will be awarded to Landscape Architecture students in the University’s College of Environment and Design.
The beach renovation at Red Top Mountain Start Park is nearing completion. For years, this popular destination on Lake Allatoona was loved too much as heavy crowds led to erosion and degradation of this natural area. Breedlove Land Planning worked with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to rehabilitate this site through the use of boardwalks, stairs and ramps to restore the environmental integrity of this wooded area while providing universal accessibility from the top of the site to the beach at the bottom. A new picnic area, restroom with outdoor changing areas, outdoor plaza and enhanced site amenities such as foot washes, showers, benches and overlooks await users. We hope to see you there in the Summer of 2022!
Last week, Azael Garza attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for Fulton County Schools’ new Global Impact Academy in Fairburn. The academy is one of two new STEM-focused high schools to open this year in the district. BLP also provided site design services for the Innovation Academy in Milton. You can learn more about both of these new schools in this recent AJC article.
On Sunday, Breedlove Land Planning sponsored the annual Cheers for Charity event honoring Boys & Girls Clubs of Dekalb County. The event raised over $20,000 to support the organization through silent and live auction items as well as a blind wine pull. Boys & Girls Clubs are not only a great cause, but also a great client!
Breedlove Land Planning was pleased to join Governor Brian Kemp, the First Lady, Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan, Speaker of House David Ralston, Commissioner Colonel Christopher Wright, the brave men and women of the Georgia State Patrol and the employees of the Georgia Department of Public Safety at the August 19th 2021 groundbreaking of the new DPS headquarters building. As part of the SSOE/Stevens & Wilkinson team, Breedlove Land Planning is the landscape architect and civil engineer for this remarkable project. The scope consists of a new headquarters building, gatehouse and entry to the State complex, parking deck, outdoor plazas and patios and most importantly a memorial to the fallen officers of the Georgia Department of Public Safety. BLP is pleased to introduce our newest team members, Laurel Fox and Nathan Rhineheimer. Laurel began working with Breedlove Land Planning as an intern in 2019, and recently joined the team full time after graduating from the University of Georgia’s College of Environment and Design with a degree in Landscape Architecture. At Breedlove, Laurel assists project teams with everything from planting design to stormwater management calculations. Laurel also has an extensive knowledge of native plant material which she enjoys putting into practice to make our projects more successful. In her free time Laurel enjoys collecting houseplants and spending time with friends and family as well as her dog, Olive, and her cat, Meatball.
Nathan Rhineheimer graduated from the University of Georgia with his Bachelor of Landscape Architecture in 2020 and joined BLP full-time in the summer of 2021. While at UGA, he had the opportunity to work at the Founders’ Memorial Garden and intern with the Jekyll Island Authority. Nathan is interested in planting design, hydrology, and historic landscapes. In his free time, he enjoys reading, grilling, and indoor rock climbing.
