The design for the renovation of the Burton Fish Hatchery, located on Lake Burton in Clarkesville, Georgia, kicked off in the fall of 2018 and construction is well underway with an anticipated completion date of February 2020. The original Georgia Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Resources Division facility was constructed in the 1940s and produces one-third of the trout that are stocked in Georgia’s streams, rivers and lakes each year. The facility includes several existing raceways that have been updated for longevity and a large, enclosed building to house eight 16-foot diameter circular tanks. This will help eliminate low production years due to weather and protect the fish from pesky predators like raccoons and birds of prey. Once completed, the facility will re-open to the public for guided tours. The renovation also includes an expanded parking area for an adjacent boat ramp accessing the lake. Let’s go fishing!
